The next thing I know is I’m waking up snuggled into Anthony chest which wouldn’t be so bad if there weren’t a mini crowd of people huddled around us, while we’re both in our pajamas, chattering away.

“Oh she’s awake. Now we can find who she is,” one boy said to another.

“And why she’s with Mr. Taylor,” a girl grumbled while giving me a dirty look. I quickly got up and headed towards my dorm building.

“His name is Anthony,” I muttered as I pushed through the crowd.

“What? What did she say?” a few of the students asked whispering to each other.

“His name is Anthony! He’s not some old man; he’s twenty years old, use his first name!” I yelled back with a small smirk. And with that Anthony finally woke up and realized he was surrounded by his students in only his pajama pants and a tank-top.

“Why are- Get going, all of you.”

“Good morning Shawn.”

“Good morning mis-” He stopped and turned around to make sure he wasn’t seeing things when he noticed I was in pajamas.

After getting changed into some actual clothes I decided to go to the cafeteria for some breakfast. I could feel people’s stares burn into the back of my head as I walk to and in the cafeteria. I acted as if I was completely clueless and like nothing happened, because nothing did. Nothing against the school rules at least. I’m not that much of an idiot; and yes that means I am an idiot, but not that much because I know at least one person thought that.

I was looking around the cafeteria for someplace to sit when Olivia called out to me.

“Kathryn! Over here!” I let out a small sigh as I walked to the table she and Hana were sitting at.

“Thank god I made friends before this morning,” I thought.

“Hey, we heard about you and Mr. Taylor.”

“What exactly did you hear? Because I assume that there are many variations and exaggerations of what happened since to everyone besides you two I’m a complete stranger who was sleeping beside the school president.”

“Not that much just that some people found Mr. Taylor and some random girl, you, sleeping together outside. The news is spreading like wild fire,” Hana said, joining the conversation.

“What most people don’t know is that Anthony or ‘Mr. Taylor’ I guess I should say, and I are old childhood friends. We haven’t seen each other in years and were simply reliving an old memory of when we used to sneak out and watch the stars together.

“Really? That’s so cute. How did you guys meet?”

“I was wondering that myself last night.”

“We met at the orphanage we lived in, but became friends at the junior high school we attended…”

“Great, lunch time. I still have that money Miss Emily-” Who was one of the people who took care of the kids at the orphanage. “-gave me, I guess I’ll go down to the store and get something,” I thought when the lunch bell rang. It wasn’t very long after my parents’ death, and I hadn’t made any friends at my new school so I was really depressed. I was walking past a house that was across the street from the school on the sidewalk when I was suddenly hit with a snowball. A bit stunned, since I had zoned out and wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings, I turned to see a few boys having a snowball fight. One of which I vaguely recognized from the orphanage, Anthony.

“Hey sorry about that, are you okay?” I just stared blankly at Anthony before I answered.

“Uhh, ya. I’m fine.”

“Hey I know you, don’t you live at the same orphanage as me?” I nodded slightly. “I’m Anthony, what’s your name?”

“Kathryn.”

“Anthony come on, lunch’ll be over before we know it,” one of the boys called.

“You live across from the school, don’t worry so much.” Anthony yelled back. “Hey, do you want to join us? Come on.” Before I could answer Anthony grabbed my hand and pulled me into the yard. “Hey guys we can have even teams now ‘cuz Kathryn here is gonna play.”

I was on a team with Anthony against the two other boys. At first I just played along as a way to pass the lunch time, but before I knew it I was actually having fun. I was smiling and even laughing.

“…after that day whenever Anthony saw that I was sad or depressed he would always try to cheer me up.” It wasn’t until after I was finished telling my story I realized Olivia and Hana weren’t the only ones listening. People stood around the table, their trays still in their hands, others leaned from their table closer to ours to eavesdrop. One boy even sat down at our table beside Olivia.

“That’s a cool story. A lot of people have been wondering how you and prez know each other.”

“Oliver? When did you get here?” Olivia asked the boy.

“You know this guy?”

“Sadly, this is my twin brother, Oliver. Oliver, this is my new friend Kathryn.”

“Nice to meet you, but I should get going. I still have some stuff to unpack and there are also a couple things I wanted to ask Anthony. Speak of the devil,” I said when I saw Anthony walk by the cafeteria window. I walked up and banged on the window to get his attention. “Stay there,” I mouthed to him, then ran out of the caf. “See ya guys later.” Anthony was talking to a few girls when I walked outside. “Hey Anthony,” I yelled and waved to him. The girls rolled their eyes when they saw it was me and quickly left. “Jeez, I thought this was an elite academy, not a high school,” I thought as I walked up to Anthony. “Who were they?”

“Oh just a few of my students. So what did you want?”

“So you do teach a class here? That was one of the things I wanted to ask you. What class do you teach?”

“Hand-in-hand combat. Is there something else you wanted to ask?”

“Yeah, it’s kind of random, but I was wondering how does the government not know about all of this? What if I person fails or simply decides they don’t want to be an assassin anymore? Also how long does it take to become a fully trained assassin that’s ready to get cases.”

“One, the government does know. Who do you think funds all of this? We do what the FBI can’t. Since there isn’t a death penalty we get rid of criminals and others who only cause trouble for people and that don’t benefit the world in any sort of way. Two, if we deem a person unfit to be an assassin or they really don’t want to be one for whatever reason we have special doctors that can erase all their memories of the academy and everything else that happened after they were approached to become an assassin using a special kind of hypnosis. And lastly, for the average person it takes three years of training, but if a person can stay within the top five, which is a list of the five best students at the school, and do well on their final exam it only takes two years. Why do you want to this kind of stuff anyways?”

“I was just randomly wondering last night before I fell asleep. Well I should get going, see ya in class.” I was about to walk away, but Anthony grabbed my arm to stop me.

“About last night… I know we haven’t seen each other in years, but we’ll get in a lot of trouble if we do that kind of thing again. I’m sure you’ve noticed the commotion its caused. We can still be friends; we can’t act like we’re fifteen year old back at the orphanage though. Being an assassin comes with a lot of strict rules. I’m sorry, but being the school president in all I have to be extra careful since I’m supposed to be a role model. I hope you understand.”

“Yeah, yeah, of course. I’m just not use to this whole assassin thing yet. I still have some stuff to unpack so I’ll see you later.”

Hearing such a thing from Anthony came a bit as a shock. It was also a wakeup call though. Just because I was reunited with Anthony didn’t mean we could just continue where we left off being foolish teenagers. We were both already twenty and I was training to be an assassin with him as my teacher. The most we could be were simple friends; and I just had to deal with that. I had to focus on becoming an assassin, which is exactly what I did. I was determined to become one of the top five.
So I decided to post my story here to see what people think about and get tips that will help improve. I hope you enjoy it and please comment any creative criticism you may have. Thanks
